Round two of the Conflict GT. I'm coming off a draw with Fritz and matched up against Bill and his Pred-Spam Blood Angels Army. 6 preds of various configuration and 5 scoring 5-man Assault Squads in Rhinos and Razorbacks, lead by a Librarian with Fear the Darkness and some other power that wasn't used in the battle.
This kind of list is difficult to use in my experience. I ran a list like a couple times and I noticed that once a few preds get whacked, it's potency is significantly diminished. Yet still I had to respect the fact this army was one of the few that could exploit poor leadership in a foot-list like mine. The tanks can shock my infantry who don't carry any melta and fear the darkness can force morale checks at a -2 penalty. Psychological warfare at its best!
The mission was a special one made by the TO. The win condition is having more scoring units in your opponents half of the table. I had 4 total scoring units, he had 5, all in transports.
With pitched battle deployment, my opponent won the roll-off, took first turn and set up on a refused flank to my left. I knew was going to have to get clear shots on his tanks so I set a squad of 2 broadsides on the top floor of some ruin on my right, and then set up the bulk of my force toward the center forming a battle line with kroot strung out in front. I infiltrated a pack of kroot carnivores on his table edge to my right, well out of harm's way. One thing could threaten them, an outflanking Baal Pred with flame cannon.
Turn 1, the armored column advanced forward, with 2 baals screening the weaker transports. He takes a couple shots but little damage is sustained by the finest of Tau'n. At this point, he has 5 scoring units in my half or close to it and I have one in his.
My turn 1, I send my piranhas out to intercept the wall of tanks and adjust my forces for the shooting phase. The carnivores in his half just sit there. In the shooting phase, I get off a couple markers and destroy a Baal, then immobile and stun another. My Deathrains manage to immobilize a rhino and stun a razorback or two. I then reposition everything in the assault phase for protection.
Turn 2, his transports move up some more so now they are in my deployment zone on my left, and behind this very large terrain piece I can't see through. His shooting is largely ineffective and his outflanking Baal doesn't show up yet. His Librarian pops out of a rhino hatch and shoots my Kroot front-line with Fear the Darkness. I need to roll a 5 or better, and I fail. The Kroot fall back but only about 6 inches or so.
In my turn the Kroot rally, and I start to pummel him some more with fire power. I can't remember what exactly I killed but this shooting phase is very productive. I think I wreck at least 2 more preds. My kroot move up 3 as their rally move and I start to re-adjust my line so I can run pop-out attacks from around the terrain, to get at his transports. My Devilfish start to move into his half of the table.
Turn 3 or something, the Baal Pred outflanks right on my infiltrating Kroot! He shocks them, they pass. He flames them, and whiffs on the to-wound rolls, 3 ONES! Yes. The kroot hold their position. But then my front-line Kroot are once again threatened by Fear...they fail their morale, and flee some more, but only a few inches. Yes!
My retailiation. I unleash a hail of fire a railguns at the Blood Angels tanks. The outflanking Baal get immobilized and a railgun blasts it's flamestorm cannon clear off. The rest of the Preds are either wrecked or neutered and I get some shots off on his transports from behind the hill. My kroot assault the outflanking Baal and then spend 2-3 turns trying to destroy it.
Turn 4, Bill gets mad at my Crisis Suits and summons the fear once again. My crisis suits, this time, fail and flee 3d6, rolling an 16 or something and run off the board. Blasted! This continues until the end of the game when I have zero crisis suits left!
At this point, I'm just trying to kill scoring units while my firepower is getting diminished by Fear every turn. Bill's scoring units are hunkered down, all hiding behind a hill. But they can't hide from Smart Missiles! Eventually I manage to knock out 2 squads of assault marines leaving him with only 3 left. The game ends with my Kroot and 2 squads of Fire Warriors in his half and 3 5-man Assault Squads in my half.
Fear the Darkness had removed 3 squads of Crisis Suits from the game. It's almost too good against Tau...but only Tau. For 3 reasons: poor leadership, jetpack equipped models falling back 3d6 and the Tau perchance for keeping close to the long table edge.
Bill ended up getting my vote for favorite opponent. He was a challenging player and maintained a friendly demeanor and even joked with me quite a bit. Great game, Bill, I can't wait to meet you again on the tabletop and at the bar for a beer!

Jawaballs vs. Old Shatter Hands Battle Report
The NOVA Open kicked off on Friday night with the "Whiskey Challenge" and open gaming for folks staying in the hotel. It was largely reserved for people who were travelling to the Open from far-flung places along the east coast. I had no intention of joining the guys, as a four-round tournament was quite enough for one weekend, until Mike Brandt called me up and asked if I wanted to play Jawaballs. Not one to turn a challenge down, I heartedly accepted and broke the bad news to my wife.
With Dawn of War as the mission deployment I decide to go second. I need Jawaballs to set up his tanks and rush them towards me. Nearly all of my heavy hitters have acute senses so I'm hopeful to be able to see through the darkness and score some hits. Jawa sets up some tanks as his basic deployment and I set up my Kroot Carnivores in either corner to help form two fire bases. So I've got kroot walls protecting my forces behind them and loads of long range fire power. I set up my corners something like this in the picture below.
In Jawa's turn 2 he rushes his tanks to take cover from incoming fire behind a large building in the center of the board as shown in the picture here. I curse the man who set up the terrain and expect the worse (by the way for the rest of the tournament, I am plagued by giant buildings, bastions and rocks set up directly in the middle of the board, allowing force to advance on me without taking fire).
I brought my NOVA list that a couple friends worked with me to develop. It's a totally new way for me to play Tau being an all-foot list when I had previously gone for a mobile Mechanized Cadre. Here it is:
1 Ethereal
1 Shas'El Commander with Twin-linked Missile Pods, Flamer and Hard Wired Target Lock.
Crisis Team - Deathrain
1 Shas'Ui Teamleader with Twin-linked Missile Pods, Flamer and Hard Wired Drone Controller
2 Shas'Ui with Twin-linked Missile Pods, Flamer
2 Gun Drones
Crisis Team - Fireknife
1 Shas'Ui Team Leader with Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker and Hard Wired Drone Controller
2 Shas;Ui with Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker
2 Gun Drones
Crisis Team - Fireknife
1 Shas'Ui Team Leader with Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker and Hard Wired Drone Controller
2 Shas;Ui with Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multitracker
2 Gun Drone
6 Fire Warriors
Devilfish with Burst Cannon, Disruption Pod
6 Fire Warriors
Devilfish with Burst Cannon, Disruption Pod
10 Fire Warriors
10 Kroot, 5 Hounds
10 Kroot, 5 Hounds
Piranha with Fusion Blaster
Piranha with Fusion Blaster
Piranha with Fusion Blaster
Broadside Team with Advanced Stabilization System
1 Shas'Ui Team Leader with Drone Controller
2 Shas'Ui
2 Shield Drones
Broadside Team with Advanced Stabilization System
1 Shas'Ui Team Leader with Drone Controller
1 Shas'Ui
2 Shield Drones
I don't have Jawa's list but it was something like this:
4 Razorbacks with Lascannons and Twin-Linked Plasma
3 Predators with Lascannon Sponsors and an Autocannon Turret
1 Land Raider Crusader carrying Assault Terminators, a Priest in Terminator Armor, a Reclusiarch, and a Librarian.
We rolled for our missions using the NOVA Format and got Dawn of War and Victory Points as the win condition. I won the die roll and let Jawa go first.
I curse the man who set up the terrain and expect the worse (by the way for the rest of the tournament, I am plagued by giant buildings, bastions and rocks set up directly in the middle of the board, allowing force to advance on me without taking fire).
A squad of Assault Marines disembark their Razorback and the tank spins around to charge one of my fire bases, then pops smoke. His Predators which are set up on one flank, all open fire on my Broadside, one managed to knick a drone and kill it, causing a morale check (note to self: attach my commander to this squad in future games). The check fails. I check line of sight to my Ethereal, good. I roll again, I fail again, Broadsides run off the board and back to the battledome. Curses!
My shooting manages to take out two Razorbacks but Jawa is on my right flank about to pounce on my Kroot. His Assault squads jump from their Razorbacks and pounce on my Kroot wall and attached Commander. The flank collapses the next turn but I have put a hurting on his two assault squads wiping one out and rendering the second combat-ineffective. Jawa's force turn to face my firebase on the left flank. His Land Raider swings around the corner but is destroyed by a Piranhas' Fusion Blaster. The match turns into a quagmire as we both try our best to collect victory points. His Terminators are continually blocked by Piranhas and worthless Gun Drones until they begin taking casualties. Soon they give up their assault and move to hide behind the ruined building. My Crisis Suits then scoot out to make a final round of shooting, killing the last two of the terminators. To claim some more VPs, my Broadsides take aim on his two Predator tanks on their side army. I am sure I can penetrate, all I need is for Jawaballs to make a Jawaroll and fail his saves. I take the shots, hit, penetrate but Jawa makes all three saves! Lucky git.
We determine VPs, the winner needs more than 250 points to win and Jawa scores 269 more VPs than I. Victory Blood Angels.
While I lost, this game taught me some important lessons about my new army list that help me in the rest of the NOVA Open. First off there is no need for my Commander to join any Kroot squads as shooters tend to ignore them anyway. Second, Piranhas need to be set up in the middle of my deployment zone so they can move out to protect either firebase from advancing forces. Next time Jawaballs, you won't be so lucky, hurr hurr.

At War with the Red Army Part 3: Blood Angels Tank Battle
In my last battle with this mini-Tournament, I faced another Mechanized Blood Angels Force. This one sported 2 Baal Predators with Flamestorm Cannons, 2 Vindicators, 3 Rhinos with troops inside, no priests however, and Land Raider Redeemer with a hefty payload; a Terminator Librarian, Corbulo and Assault Terminators with Combat Shields and Thunderhammer. The deployment for this mission was Dawn of War and the mission objective were holding table quarters, not with scoring units, just by having more points in each quarter. This meant that killing models was very important, because if you can whittle your opponent down, you can overwhelm table quarters to claim them.
The roll-off for First Turn was in my favor so I passed it to him. With Tau, more and more, I need to know where my opponent is setting up his guys so I can react and deploy in a position that will give me distance. Terrain doesn't matter so much with Tau as we've got Disruption Pods on our vehicles and the Jump-Shoot-Jump dance to protect our suits. I would also need to be careful of the Land Raider crashing down the field.
His first turn he set up centrally, a good move when you're facing Tau. I decided, almost on a whim, to set up in either corner. I divided my army in two. Each corner had a squad of suits, a Hammerhead and other supporting units. One group had pathfinders and the piranhas. The other had the "decoy-fish", which the pathfinders' Devilfish, deployed empty.
I hadn't done this set up in a long while and it really worked in my favor this time. By setting up two firebases in the corners with his units in the center, I was able to move up the field and hit side armor the Vindicators and Predators, wrecking them all by turn 3. If one tank turned to face one corner, it would expose it's rear armor to the other. He also had to attack two different groups, but with a Hammerhead in each corner, they were supporting each from a distance. Here's a diagram that will give you a quick run down of the game.
His terminators were really nasty and took out my Broadsides and forced me to flee one corner. The other flank held although he did manage to immobilize a Hammerhead. It still had a great firing lane though and took out a Tank by hitting side armor and marine here and there with its Ion Cannon.
By turn 6 I had 3 quarters to his 1, Tau victory. Keep posted as I am working on doing a video of this set up.

At War with the Red Army Part 2: Blood Angels Battle Report
Game 2 of the 8 on the 8th, Old Shatter Hands and his Cadre stood ready to meet the on-coming charge of the Red Army. Game 2's mission was objectives, with 5 objectives placed around the board. One in the center, and the other 4 in each table quarter. I was happy with the Objectives Mission. The last game had been victory points and I was happy that I could use trickier instead of killing power to win this one. I played against a guy named, John, and he had a really cool army based around one unit of Jump Pack Honor Guard with Storm Shields and powerweapons, with a couple hammers lead by a Sanguinary Priest. This unit wasn't painted but it was converted to look like the Spartans from 300. Very cool. He also had two melta-dreads and a Librarian Dread, 4 Melta Attack Bikes and all of his troops in Rhinos. about 50% of his army was painted and the Librarian Dread was really cool looking. I can't wait to see this army when it is finished.
I won the roll for first turn and passed it ot my opponent. Deployment was table-quarters and he wisely choose a quarter that forced me to set up with little cover. He deployed everything on the board with his Librarian Dread up in front, in line with his Rhinos with Attack Bikes on the ends. Behind them, the Honor Guard readied themselves for battle.
I reserved my Devilfish carrying the Fire Warriors and sent my Kroot on an outflanking maneuver. I set up my XV88s on a hill right up in front as I wanted them to take the brunt of the charge. Behind them were my Crisis Suits whose flanks were protected by Hammerheads on either side. Piranhas lay in wait close by, ready to pounce.
The Blood Angels are fast. By the end of the first turn, his army was right in front of me, posed to attack. This, however, didn't concern me. I hadn't deployed any scoring units so the army that he was attacking was not important. I only wanted my Piranhas to survive so I could contest objectives later in the game.
I only needed to wreck my opponents mobility and the game would be mine. With his whole army arrayed before me, I knew that he would probably destroy most of my units but I knew that I had the time and the hitting power to cripple his mobility, making it impossible for him to win. I, on the other hand, had three scoring units in reserve, who would come later at full-strength.
After of few turns of bloody combat and plasma-rifle fire. My non-scoring units had been gutted and few space marines remained alive. All of his mobilty had been removed and only one rhino remained. My Kroot outflanked and took an objective in his quarter, my devilfish moved out to claim a corner objective and a middle one.
Both of these objectives were set up in terrain and I failed both dangerous terrain tests for the Fish! My Fire Warriors had to disembark and run onto the objectives for the win. Because of that I am going to start purchasing sensor spines on my my Fire Warriors Devilfish from now on.

At War with the Red Army: 3 Battles with the Blood Angels
Last weekend I had the opportunity to play 3 games against the new Blood Angels. I had been invited to 8 on the 8th, a mini-tournament of 8 players brought together for some dicing and some play-testing of the missions for the up-coming Vegas GT qualifier, The NOVA Open. From what I experienced last year with the SGI Outdoor Tournament (from the same gaming club) and this little event, the NOVA Open is really shaping up to be something you can't miss. So if you're interested in lots of gaming, great prizes and even trophies to show off to your friends, you better sign up. Old Shatter Hands will be there with his Cadre to make sure the Tau Empire gets its glory!
Since my last post I'd tweaked my list slightly as I managed to get Target Locks on my two commanders and the XV88 Team Leader. These little pieces of kit really became valuable in 2 of the 3 games, more on that later. So here's the 2,000 point list. I hope reading it doesn't bore you to death that you don't make it to actual meat of this post.

Game 1 - When Mephiston comes a knockin'...
As you can see in the picture below, Mark Ferek's army featured a good amount of infantry, Assault Marines in both Rhinos and with Jump Packs, and Sternguard, all supported by a large contingent of Space Marine Predators. As if that weren't enough, Mephiston felt it necessary to personally accompany the Assault Force to battle.
Maybe because it was early or it might have the jitters from facing the Blood Angels for the first time, I made a few mistakes in this game that cost me dearly. The Blood Angels moved out to methodically deconstruct my army piece by piece until it was annihilated.
You can see how he deployed above. The majority of his army is centrally located, packed together with his troops in Rhino APCs behind his AV 13 Predators. The right flank is occupied by another Baal Predator (with only an assault cannon no heavy bolters) and the Sternguard are taking positions in cover. Mark may not have realized it but this position acted as a lure for me. I deployed nearly my entire army directly across from the Sternguard and his Baal Predator. I foolishly thought I would move out to destroy it and move onto the next targets. It proved a major military blunder for the Tau Empire. It was foolish as Mark was able to swing his whole are in and lock my in a position where all he had to do was close the noose and my army would be wrecked. Click on the diagram below to get an idea of what happened.
You can see that I should have set up on the other flank and attacked from that angle. Mark was able to get into a position where all of his predators had their front armor facing my army. He also had the speed to close a noose around my army and slaughter it. He had a good mix of long range fire and meltaguns to wreck my vehicles. Mephiston was a beast! Without any psychic protection, he was able to cast all of his powers each tunr, giving him a jump pack, Strength 10 and preferred enemy. Nothing could even hold out against him one turn. By the end of turn 7, my army was nothing but smoldering wrecks and bloodied corpses.
It was solid plan and I learned a lot from it that would come in handy in the next games. Most importantly I learned that I am going to have to be more careful with my deployment. Against the Blood Angels, I don't have the speed to re-adjust like I might against other armies. I also learned that the army I brought does not have enough high strength weapons to knock out AV 13 vehicles and that the key to winning against multiple Predators. Space Marine Tanks are built for frontal attacks and are vulnerable to flanking. If I am to face that many tanks again, I will need a cunning ploy to expose side armor. This would become crucial in game 3 as we will see. For the organizers take on the battle go to Whiskey and 40k
