Ebay Auctions This Week

Whoring my work out to the masses, trying to make room and money to fund a new army project, I've listed a couple more things to Ebay this week.

Here are the listings:
Painted Blood Angels Baal Predator
Painted Blood Angels Assault Squad with Jump Packs
Painted Space Wolves Long Fangs with Missile Launchers

Bid early, bid often!

I am actually trying to decide what my next army should be. I've got a couple ideas.

Eldar Jetbikers with Dual Seer Council?
I've always liked the playstyle of really fast armies and this one seems pretty cool. I'm not sure how competitive it is, but I believe with Dual Seer Council I could at least put up a tough fight. I'm actually thinking of using Dark Eldar models for this army and use 5th Edition models for a 4th edition codex, kind of doing the opposite of a lot of counts-as armies these days.

Space Marines?
I know, I know. WTF? Well I have some really cool ideas for a Space Marines army, taking a complete departure from the Gothic imagery of Space Marines and give them more advanced technology and wargear. Of course making it a balanced force with lots of tanks and some assault Terminators. Lots of ideas for modelling here and I thinking of transferring my Tau color scheme to marines, with some improvements of course.

Just letting you know, but the Space Wolves link doesn't actually go to the Space Wolves auction.

OSH, I think you should go with Eldar. There are already som any Space Marine armies that it would be great to have more Xenos! Plus, Tau+Eldar=Win! The two greatest Xenos races out there! Definitely go Eldar.

PS - I have blog here: http://brothersandrivals40k.blogspot.com/

Good luck on the new army!

i don't know if you have seen the dornian heresy series on bolter and chainsword, but when you mentioned technologically advanced space marines i immediately thought of the alternate Ultramarines from this series. I haven't really seen anyone else try and make the marines look like the ones from the pictures. just a thought for some inspiration.

Misfits. Awesome. I'd let that tank kill me.

Wow, it is always interesting to see someone sell of their minis. I think my family members are too much of a hoarder to do such a thing? lol

I thought the new Dex would have gotten more games from you, rather than less?

+++

I think the Eldars are the most handsome minis in the game. Ever. Except the original Deldar, lol.

So what do you want from your second army?

No armour - Armour?
Flesh - No flesh?
Robes, etc?
Fast or not?
Shooty or not?
Choppy or not?
Numerous or not?

How do you want them to play?
How do you want them to look?
What in the fluff really grips you?

My last real post was a long time ago, cause I have some things interferring with my blogging life and because I´m currently painting an eldar army (my favourite army since... ever), so if you ask me... Eldar hands down, they are cool, movile, fast, cool, hard hitting, with lots of options, very cool and is the only other race in 40K that instead of killing the tau at first sight a farseer will tell the ethereal:... TODAY, this is a common foe, wanna band together and put more high strenght weapons and cool tricks that anyone can stand?

Oh, and they are sooooo cool too.

On the other hand you can try the flavour of the month... the DARK eldar (I prefer the classic ones, but...)

Have I said they are cool?

Nah, to be honest you paint so solid I don´t want to be depressed by your photos... so Space marines ;P

Hi OSH,

Eldar or Marines? hmm Well you played blood angels and are now selling them and space wolves, so let me ask: Just how differently would your new marine army play from what you already had? Are you sure they would provide enough novelty for your interest? Shooty or Scrappy, Marines play like Marines. They're tough, but tend not to be very oriented towards tactics of finesse. Eldar are all about finesse, and super-tech that seems magical, but are rather soft.
With your tau you appear to be a finesse strategist. Would you like this force to play with finesse or be more blunt? If I was going for finesse and style, I would go for eldar. They have soo many ways to build a force. Even with an old codex, they are so diverse. Marines aren't diverse comparably, but do have the intimidation factor.

So with Eldar, you will get beauty, speed, finesse.
..with Marines, you will get tough, fierce, and another variation of what you had already played with blood angels.

If Marines, then what tactical methodology would you use? Maybe a Dark Angels successor would be up your ally?
If Eldar, then the sky is the limit. Corsairs? no problem. Craft World? ok. Exodites? Those too.

I hope I helped you with my thought process here. Maybe it is the same you are having. It's not an easy choice really. The main thing that sticks out to me is that you have already played Marines and they are now on Ebay. Maybe it was the red scheme and chain swords ( and psycho killers) that became old with them, I don't know. They look great though.

A friend of me is playing an Eldar Jetbike Army with dual Seer council and I can say, they are a pain in the a-r-s-e...

True, there are tons of SM armies out there, but seeing what you get out of models, I'd say go for them and make an army, that really stands out.
Like the anonymus stated earlier, the Dornian heresy offers some nice ideas about getting an alternative look.

On the other hand, going gothic I'd say, go for a mix of Black Templars, Dark Angels and maybe the new Grey Knights even. This could get some nice results.

Tim said...

Wow, Thank you all for the thoughtful responses.

@Marshall Wilhelm (of the Wilhelm scream i presume?)
I like what you've laid out. Yes I want to paint armor, and I'm looking for a painting scheme that will push me to learn and master new techniques and colors. Shooty or Choppy, it's hard to say. I'd say I want both of course. I have to say I am leaning toward Eldar, especially since you all have cheered me in that direction. Lately I've been looking at a lot of Brom art from the Dark Sun DnD books and so on, and I am really liking what I see there. The colors are nice and warm and I want to see that across a whole army. My idea for eldar is to first build a jetbike army using Dark Eldar jetbikes, but play them as guardian jetbikes of course as they are troops. What grips me about Eldar is that I can make an army of fast-moving raiders, space pirates, or "reavers" like from Firefly....

Marines...my ideas for marines are not so much as playstyle oriented. I see a lot of marine armies out there but I've never seen one done in the way I'd like to see them...not as space knights with swords but as highly advanced modern soldiers...complete with kit, dust, dirt and grime, combined with awesome firepower and great looking tanks.
Which brings me to Colbalt Cannon,

@Colbalt Cannon, I think you're right. Marines aren't my thing. I have sold off my blood angels because I was no longer interested in playing them. Even with a new 'dex...they just became too numerous...I want a unique army. And yes, i think I like tactical finesse. i like playing tricks, I like doing something that's different from just rushing in.

Plus the eldar range has some of the best miniatures out there...I think I am decided. Now time for a list...my first incarnation of eldar will probably be dual seer council on jetbikes, 3 prisms and as many guardian jetbikes as I can get...maybe some vypers...

tim said...

3 prisms are quite expensive, especially if you are going with seer council and jetbikes. I would suggest looking at Fritz40k's stuff (saimhann.blogspot.com) for list ideas. Other than that, Maybe a squad of singing spears, because it really hurts not to have any power weapons in the army otherwise. just my two cents.

Cobalt Cannon said...

I'm glad we were able to help you Osh! We mentioned Dark Angels or successors, because they are the most notably"shooty" space marine chapter, but even then, like you realized, you really seem to want something brand new for you. Eldar will probably be tons of fun to paint, build and play.

So what do you think you are leaning to? Corsairs?
Make sure you check out the new forge world eldar. They have a walker that counts as troops with a jet pack! Now that's cool! And the new aspect warriors that are prism carriers. Cool stuff! They cost the mortgage, but are cool. lol Sorry son ( or daughter) no college fun for you! Daddy needs some Eldar! lol
Please let us know what you come up with. I can't wait to see it all come together.

?

Nah, I haven't been killed. Yet.
:P

I am glad my list was useful. For a while my brother and I thought GrimDark was a bit silly. Prayers for machines, etc. *facepalm*
Though I believe in the power of prayer, it isn't de rigueur for machines, lol.

That was part of our love of Tau and Eldar. They had all the stuff we wanted our post-humans to have :P

But now I have chosen to embrace what GW puts out. It is more satisfying to me that way :)

I chose Templars as I felt I could kitbash every kind of Marine stuff into them for the biggest modelling potential.

Perhaps your Eldar could be a blended mash of the Eldars, with Craftworld and Dark all in one.
I would also heartily recommend the Fantasy range of Elf things too.
I feel Fantasy things have made my Templars better than if they were only 'out of the box'.

Maximise your modelling potential :D

eBay makes this kind of kit-bashing much easier than ever before.

Okay so onto my thoughts on paint schemes. You know how High Elves are in white and Dark Elves are in black?
If I ever did a Delf army, they would be painted in Helf colours. After all, if it was the fashion before the split, then I would say the Delves would be even prouder wearers on 'proper Elf wear' than ever before.
A bit like how ethnic minorities can be more 'Greek' [or whatever nationality] than those who still live in the homeland.
Plus it would be cool and a great talking point.

I think in 40K, the same potential is there.
If you have a Deldar Kabal, paint them in Craftworld colours.
You could paint the Incubi as Scorpions. Wyches as Banshees, etc, as you wish.

Talking about Eldar coolness, check out these Wraithlords:
http://eldar.arhicks.co.uk/miniatures/craftworld/craftworld_wraithlord_1.php

and the 'see also' bit on the left.

Much cooler than any of the 'dreadnoughts' the Deldar have. Use them instead!

What about doing a Ravenwing army; or a deathwing. Seeing what you can do with regular XV8s I'm sure you could do something equally awesome with terminators or SM bikers. Plus seeing as there is a battleforce which contains these models that you would basicaly need it would be the cheaper option?

Richard Erwin said...

Deathwing rules.

HellHenni said...

I've always dreamed about building an eldar army made of wraithguards. Only a farseer (runeprophet?) or maybe Yriel of Iyanden as the only living members of the army.
To be only taking wraithguards would limit you to much of course, so I thought about remodelling wraithguards on bikes to make count as jetbikers. Same for the aspects: for example modeling warp spiders out of wraithguards should also be possible.
All in all, it should be mainly consist of infantry (standard and elites), bikes and of course some wratihlords.

The main problem with that though is, that the wraithguard are currently not available as plastics and are rather expensive (both $ and points).

But in my opinion it would make an unique looking army.

C ya.

Marshal Wilhelm said...

Hmm. I think blogger ate my comment. I will command-c it next time....

Okay, I got into Templars because of the great kitbash potential.

I think you can do the same thing with the Eldars.

Use both Craftworld and Dark Eldar kits in the army and even on a miniature.

You can also use the Fantasy Elves, like I have used Empire and Bretonnian gear for my Templars.
eBay makes it easy, nowadays.

I also would, if I had a Delf army, paint them in Helf colours.
Great talking point.

Also, people who have emigrated are very strong retainers of their culture. Sometimes stonger than those still living in the homeland.
I think the Delves would certainly consider themselves the 'true' Elves and wouldn't drop their culture to become 'evil'

This would also work in 40K. Paint your Deldar in a Craftworld scheme.
You could even paint the incubi as Scorpions and Wyches as Banshees ;)

Marshal Wilhelm said...

Here are some sweet Wraithlord conversions.
Which I think is one of the best miniatures *ever*

I would use them over the Talos, etc. too

I have a 1200 point game against Tyranids on Tuesday. Any thoughts of strategy? Should I bring two waves of gun drones units to help slow them up? Concentrate Suit fire on synapse creatures?

Thanks

Tim said...

@Richard, to be honest with you, I've never played against the new nids. My guess would be to focus on killing hte guants first, and make sure you kill any 'stealers lurking around.

Guys, I think I am going with Dark Eldar/Eldar. First building a jetbike Eldar army using Dark Eldar models then building out from that to build a DE army.

I realized after looking at Darkwyn's Army on Bols that I haven't seen a nicely painted DE army yet and I want to...so that's what I'm gonna do.

HellHenni said...

@Old Shatter Hands: We're all looking forward to see what you're up to. The Eldar and Dark Eldar have both a really nice range of models and I'm well conviced, that you will make something astonishing! ;-)

@Richard Erwin: I had a game against nids last weekend. Was my first against the new codex. Though I played Dark Angels in that game I learned a lesson or two.
As always keep your fire concentrated! It's way important to finish off what monsters / hordes you've begun to destroy.
The new rules for the "hive mind" have less an impact on the lesser beings then it used to be. The close combat units will just go for the nearest target in a frenzy and the shooty units will cower and shoot anything that comes to close (that's how my friend explained it to me).
As it used to be, the monstrous creatures are a pin to kill, but alot of them tend to have the regeneration upgrade, which means, that they can get back Wounds (on a role of 6 I think per lost wound and round).
So focus your fire! ;-)

I'd dare to bring two hammerheads, as they've never let me down. Else, go for a good mix of long range fire power. Rather then going for gun drones, I'd rather take more units of firewarriors due to their greater weapon range. Personally I wouldn't go much for flamers. Getting close to nids is always a bad idea! ;-)

Good luck to you.

@ OSH & Henny

Thanks for the words guys. Tyranids showed up late so I ended up getting matched against Khorn/Nurgle Chaos Marines. I lost two crisis suits to a plasma cannon hit and a whole slew of Bugger Bots to screen assaults. They were my only casualties. This was the first time I had ever used the tactics from this site and wow did they work. My piranha screen didn't get a chance to shine as I was able to destroy every rhino on turn one with Broadsides. It was epic. It was a long and painful walk across the board for chaos. One which none of his models survived. It was a complete wipe. The only way I strayed from your scheme was to use twinlinked plasma guns and twinlinked missle pods, both with target arrays on my Crisis suits. I think it really spays off.

Thanks again guys!

Seeking advice, as usual.

Wednesday I am playing Imperial Fists in a 1350, Spearhead mission. I know my opponent will be bringing a drop pod with veterans armed with multi-melta combi weapons as well as a landspeeder tornado with a power fist on board.

Is there any hope against this list? Even if I bring a pile of kroot to surround my suits and broadsides, his drop pod will land right in the middle of my firebase. Should I try to keep everyone in reserve and deploy a pathfinder Devilfish to coordinate deep strikes on the bod and speeder?
