Ogre Thursday

Tau of War isn't alway Tau-focussed, like I'd like it to be. I can't only paint Tau models now can I? so today I want to share some of the ogres I've been working on. (Although if you look closely, you can see some battlesuits in the background, those will be posted soon as well).

I'm not sure how effective these boyz are in Warhammer, but they've got to me some of the coolest models GW has made. They aren't the easiest models to convert and don't have a wide range of pose-abilty like other plastic kits. What they lack in range, they make up for in character.

Getting the skin right seems essential to making Ogres look good, and it seems to get better with every batch I do. I've got to work a bit on the warpaint but overall the models look good. In the next batch, I hope to improve the warpaint, taking these models from good to great.

Some people ask me how I get such clear pictures. I use a Nikon D90 with natural light. Always. And what's even cooler is that I've recently set up my painting table right by two large windows! This is great for painting on weekends during the day but at night I've still got to use my 3 lamps to paint.

Regarding photos - what kind of lense? I got Nikon D80, but my lenses do not have macro setting, so I' strugling with making photos from quite a distance - and looking for some techniques to improve it...

Do you know of any Farsight army lists? Something that uses is increased bodyguard size to an advantage? Has he ever been FAQ'd so he can be used in smaller games?

Rich, I never used Farsight, but Sholto over at Incunabulum has been using him a bit. Check out these posts: http://incunabulum.co.uk/blog/2010/10/15/batrep-farsight-tau-vs-space-wolves-1750pts/

I was wondering when we would get some of this goodness

Hey mate - you're really hitting it with the flesh. Ogres are one of thse models that if the flesh looks bad, the whole model takes a dive.

Wicked job - I'm sure they look great en masse in a unit with that war paint.

Very nice paintjob, man.

Indeed... Can you tell us how did you painted the skin??

Tactics Question: I was watching some space marine players this weekend and they were using two Land Speeder Storms. When they had the first turn they would scout move and then move at cruising speed, then deploy their two units of scouts, armed with a power fist in each, and wreck a tank or elite troop, all in turn 1-1. This seems like a disaster for us Tau. Is there anything we can do about this? Since they deploy first I suppose we could try to deploy more than 24" from the Storms. The only other thought I had was to deploy the kroot in dense field around the the Broadsides and Hammerhead so that the scouts would be forced to assault the kroot.

Any thoughts?

How can I contact you about commissions?

Richard, that is what I would do. Put kroot out front and make him fight them....
