Painting a Devilfish: The Warthog

Brian, our local Dark Angels Chapter Master, hosted Hobby Night to prepare for a local tournament happening next weekend at the Glen Burnie Bunker. I decided I was going to try and paint a Devilfish in a weekend and I was going to get a great start on it at Hobby Night. The only way to do so, the citadel spray gun. I'm not sure if you have ever used a spray gun. 1) This tool is easy to use 2) this tool is fast 3) this tool is awesome. Brian, coincidentally, has an air compressor so instead using that nasty propellant GW sells, we were able to spray our models with good clean air in his kitchen. I'm going to show you how I got a great base coat on my devilfish in less than 1 hour and 30 minutes. The plan was to keep it neat, clean and be methodical.
Step 1: Assemble your Devilfish. In this case, I had assembled this 'fish months ago.

Step 2: Undercoat with Krylon black primer. In many ways, superior to GW's.
Step 3: Spray with Khemri Brown. Although, I would be spraying with a Vallejo color, I wanted to use Khemri Brown as a foundation before using Vallejo. I suspect this step can be skipped.

Step 3: Spray with Vallejo Model Color: Khaki. Cover the entire model for a good even coat.

Step 4: Apply your base coats. I painted some paneling foundation paint: Orkhide Shade. I painted the gun, air intake and vents Chaos Black. then I painted the Seeker Missiles and some other marker beacon foundation paint: Deneb Stone as a base for white.

Shas'la, your chariot awaits! Our Devilfish is ready for the next step, shading and outlining. I would say this Devilfish is battle-ready though. I decided to name this one the Warthog because it's seeker missiles look like a boar's tusks. In game terms its a warfish, 2 seeker missiles, Smart Missile System, Targeting Array, Multitracker and Disruption Pod.

why seeker missiles? They are the most overpriced, ineffective things going.

actually like them and glued them on without really thinking about it. I always roll with a full PF squad as well so they kind of make sense. Plus opponents aren't really expecting them. On piranhas you can easily get side/rear armor shots with them...on devilfish not so much. Have you tried them lately? Sometimes you just need that S8, AP3 shot...

You say that's Vallejo model: Khaki? Looking at the Vallejo chart, Khaki appears much darker than that. It's hard for me to blatantly rip off your color scheme if their chart is wrong... :-)

It think it's time for me to do a proper tutorial. Lots of people seem interested in this color scheme. Yes, it is in fact Vallejo Model Color: Khaki. It might look darker on the Vallejo color samples though.

I'm going to post the finished model this weekend with close-ups and stuff so you can all try this at home.

You, Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! I look forward to the tutorial.
