Puretide Speaks: The Kroot Wall

Surfing through Youtube found this little interesting piece of Tau tricks. This video lays out how to set up a strong firebase and protect it by lines of kroot. Let's watch...

Very effective. I've played against an army like this with my Blood Angels and I got annihilated.

But the question you have to ask yourself is, Is this the style of play that suits me? Personally, I love to play a game of movement and this is simply too static for my tastes. So regardless of the effectiveness of this tactic, this is something I would never do. I enjoy the moving game too much. Old Shatter Hands' Cadre flows like water, hits like a hurricane and burns like fire but holds like the mountains...

I'd never make it too, 'cause as you I prefer moving and overFLOWING my opponent much more than just sitting and firing. However I still have too few DF's to be mobile as I want to. So I was thinking lastly about 72 mobilized FWs... and I started to count and seriously think about it.

That would be one hell of a game to play SwiftHunter! Six FULL squads of F/W's; I can currently achieve five full squads, including using two Hammerheads and a skyray as Devilfish, leaving me with no tanks!

My Kroot meatshield tactic isn't far off from what the guy in this vidoe does, only I have fewer kroot in my second squad with three Krootox (only for the aid of their ranged weapons). The second squad tends to be in another bit of cover rather than both in the same forest.

Comments about XV9 Hazard-suits from the previous blog entry; I have been using a squad of 3 in the last couple games I've played and they are good. fitted only with shield generators as having shield drones on them seems too costly at the moment.
If you do field them, keep them alongside a fellow crisis squad so that they can work together like a tag team, supporting each other in some dire moments. (your opponent won't know who to shoot at; the anti-tank crisis suits, or the squad who can dish out up to 18 strength 5 shots per round!!)

Just would like to say, an army based on this kroot tactic does indeed work well. For those of us who are not pleased with the fish of fury I find it very helpful. Not saying your armies aren't good, but in my experience that whole 'overflowing' thing has failed time and time again. :(
If you ever feel the need Shatter Hands, I'd really suggest you try out an army based on this. Yesthetruthhurts.com has some good info on these sorts of tau armies. And about the whole gunline thing... It's really only a gunline until units start crashing into your lines, then it's like a fluid stream rebounding around the tresspassers with rapid-firing, markerlight assisted missile death. Anyway, I've been far more than pleased with my army thus far. ;)

Tank Shock

Thats how you beat the Kroot "Wall"

Very simple to counter you overly worried folks.

I'm only new to this but whats preventing a guy from positioning a pile of flamers on this "wall" don't flamers negate cover?

Honestly I don't think it works very well either...tank shock, flamers and so on will ruin it. I think the point is that you shouldn't be allowing people to get that close though. Although these days this tactic doesn't work so well with all the stuff that is in the newer codices. BAAL Predators with flamers will scout move up 18 inches and then flame this "wall" in turn one. Then the kroot flee because they have poor leadership. Might work against noobs though.

I know this is an old video, but thought I would leave this for any future players.

I am going to be blunt. The Tau player in this video was a terrible player. Infact most people on youtube are terrible Tau players. Even with all the tacticas and forums online, there seem to be only a very small percent of people that know how to play Tau properly. The simple fact is that I cannot remember a youtube video that I have seen that Tau has won. It's not because they are a weak army, because they are definately strong, but people just don't know how to play them. They use strategies that would work for Marines and on occassion Guard, but not Tau and most of the time, if not always, leads to their demise.

@humanobservation, that's not really a constructive comment. Do you have any suggestions on how Tau should be played?

heh.... a Librarian with "fear of darkness" power completely obliterates my kroot walls in two turns (forcing them to fall back)....without firing a single shot. Those were reserved for my suits... sigh!
