Tactica Challenge: What's wrong with this picture?

The picture below shows my deployment in a recent tournament. At first glance, this looks like a really good set-up. The Broadsides are set up at the top of the building with plenty of cover. The two teams of Crisis Suits are ready to link up with Hammerheads and the Piranhas are ready to turbo-boost out to attack my opponent's flank. Although my opponent isn't completely set up yet, he does leave his left flank wide open and exposed. For your reference this army was 2 flying Daemon Princes, Oblits, 2 Defilers and a host of other close-combat nasties. However, there is something that hampered me about this set up the entire game and I believe that it ultimately cost me the game. Long story short, I was not able to fully attach the weak left flank as I had hoped. Can you guess why? What is wrong with this set-up?

Im just a collector, but I guess that your piranhas are in not a good position since the building block their passage from your right side.
is that correct besides everthing is too cluistered?

Your suits are too near to the vehicles and thereby will suffer from templates which are laid on Piranhas or the Railhead eevn if your plan was to hide them behind.

@woroxon, yes, they're a little too clustered but that wasn't the answer I was looking for. You've got one thing right though. The piranhas should have been deployed on my far right flank. With Disruption Pods, there is no need stay in cover like that.

@Alex, You're right! Having my suits too close to the hammerhead did become a problem. My opponent was able to drop templates on the railheads and still hit a couple suits in the process. Next time I'll be hanging them back a bit. A valuable lesson for anyone using those two units in synergy. There is another that is wrong though and it has to do with maneuverability.

I'll go out on a limb and guess you didn't leave yourself enough room for the three suits in the building to jsj in and out. I'm not one for eyeballing distances (I've been accused of calling 6" a foot) but it looks like those back two suits couldn't make a jump out of the building without a lot of other movement first.

Your two railhead-battlesuit teams are separated on opposite sides of the building, and thus could not fully support each other on one specific flank. This is really a major problem because railheads only move 6" a turn. (usually)

Since you said you wanted to attack the weak left flank, the railhead and battlesuits on the right would actually have to move forward and then left to go in that direction. Against this chaos army, moving forward at all is a bad idea unless it is to destroy an isolated unit.

Just my observations. =)

Ultra Lemming WINS! That is exactly what the problem was. The entire game my hammerhead on the right was isolated and eventually destroyed being unable to reposition to the left. There wasn't enough room to move it behind the building and doing so would lose me a turn of shooting. Moving forward was not an option as the thing would have been trashed by the two flying princes.

it's funny with Tau Armies, terrain isn't needed as much. With Disruption pods on the tanks and suits miving behind there isn't as much of a need for terrain to gain cover saves. You can create your own cover.

Congrats Ultra Lemming!

It was a fun game!

I like leaving a "weak" flank, both as bait and also to try and drive the opponent into splitting his forces.

The only other thing I saw wrong was over usage of the building! With a 2/4 save the broadsides don't need to hide.

Cannot wait for our rematch!

@Dameon, Broadsides actually have only a 2+ save. Their drones have a 2+ and 4+ invulneralbe save. Broadsides do need cover from all those plasma shots on your oblits!

Out of curiosity, where are your troops in this game? Fire warriors held in reserve?

Yep, my three devilfisha re almost always held in reserve during objective based games. I need to preserve them until the later turns of the game.
