Broken Contract

Dear Readers,

I started this blog in 2008 out of love for the game of 40k and my enthusiasm for a single faction, Tau Empire. It features more than just those things, including my work on the hobby, commissions, other little projects and thoughts I have. I told myself way in the beginning that this blog would rant-free. That it would do what Fritz did for his army-build enthusiasm for Tau, create an atmosphere of fluff around, create a world full of characters and tales of battle.

You responded. People come to this blog to read about all the great things in the Tau'Va and beyond. It was a happy little place for a good three years and that was the contract. I produce posts about my love for the hobby, in return, you all keep my enthusiasm up with comments of encouragement and readership. It worked so well.

I broke that contract with this post: http://tauofwar.blogspot.com/2011/12/whats-wrong-with-40k-emperor-wears-no.html

I apologize. I really shouldn't have posted that article. You come to Tau of War for enthusiasm for the hobby, not e-bitching. I feel like I have cast my lot with the likes of YTTH, a blog that simply bleeds depression and negativity. That is not the direction I want to take Tau of War. I am removing the post for this blog and in the future, I promise not to share such negativity with you all again.

Please forgive my momentary lapse of enthusiasm and positivity and I hope you return next week after the holidays. I've got some neat things to show you in the new year. In the meantime, enjoy this time with your family, friends, 40k, dice and your dear little army men.

Happy Holidays and Happy Hunting, Shas'la!

Tim

Ps check out this Alpha Legion Rhino that I've done with my airbrush. I love that little machine!

Meh, don't be so hard on yourself. Sometimes one needs to vent. If ever a game company could be frustrating, it's GW. I don't ever remember getting mad at FASA, TSR, or WotC.

^I hope you were being sarcastic, because WotC gets my vote for the most frustrating gaming company.

Tim, I am happy that you have come back and apologized for the complaining and negativity. It is precisely the reason that I stay away from the Forums. They are eat up with complaining and negativity. In the blogosphere, one can choose to read the blogs of others who enjoy various aspects of our hobby. Enthusiasm and being positive is far more interesting reading than negativity. I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of 40k. As a general rule, I try to avoid all negative influences in life. Life is just too short to spend time on the downward spiral of complaining and negativism.

In short, welcome back. The Tau Empire (other Tau players) needs your positive influence and encouraging example.

I'm with Fett, here. We are to blindly follow the Pied Piper and demand nothing?

GW needs some adjustments and while there is a lot of groaning about it lately, I found your post was well thought out and relevant - not bitchy at all.

Additionally, your Infinity stuff has been great. More of that, too, please :)

It's one post, no big deal, besides, no game is perfect.

Just because the medium is non-physical doesn't mean it must be so ephemeral. Which is a fancy way of saying, don't delete that post!

I disagreed with pretty much everything you said there, so it's not like I want it to stay up because you were sticking it to the man or whatever. I still think 40K is a really fun game, and even in the ludicrously one-sided matches I have (I'm looking at you, Descent of Angels lists!) there's still the rewarding challenge of seeing just how much damage I can do before I get dragged down. But you disagree, at least in some sense or at some time or whatever, and it's a perfectly reasonable viewpoint to have. Deleting that post wouldn't improve your blog in any way, and in fact erasing the conversation that took place in the comments section would be a net loss, in my opinion. You put something like that post out there, and people actually take a stand on an issue one way or the other, and probably put some thought into why they're doing it. And getting people to think, well, how can that ever be a bad thing?

Don't beat yourself up, it was a well argued post that stimulated some great discussion. This is your blog and you should be allowed to use it to communicate your disatisfaction. People (including me) follow it specifically to see and hear about your take on and experiences with 40k, though I should confess that your infinity content is what interests me.

In my honest opinion don't delete the post, but hey it's up to you :) keep up the good work.

What are you using for the air source for your brush? A compressor of some sort or...

I hope you're not air-brushing Neolithic style, like how they did the cave paintings :)

Consider un-deleting your 'cri de coeur', if for no other reason than to give context to your [unneeded] apology.

I'm with you all the way Tim. No need to delete posts, or give apologies for being normal. Everyone complains, and to pretend to never have a complaint is just false. I see too much of that these days when there is plenty to complain about. There is a positive side to complaining as well. Complaints motivate change.
Your blog has been a great source of enjoyment for me to read, and I follow it. In the years that I have been following it you've had what? One post of complaints?
That's nothing to worry about my friend.
I'll keep coming back here to read and look at the photos that you post, have some good laughs, and look forward to the next post.

Great looking Rhino by the way!! The colors are so relaxing and pleasing to the eye, that it's hard to believe it's for chaos.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I'm looking forward to reading your posts in 2012 especially since the Tau will be getting an update!

As for the post: Keep it around. If anything, it'll be fun to see how much of what you were dissatisfied with gets addressed in the new edition.

No need to delete the post. I read it, disagreed and decided not to comment. But I didn't think anything less of you or the blog.

I hope you and your family/friends/minions have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

For what it’s worth I have to agree, keep the post!

A bad day and a rant does not have to make you YTTH, it can just open up a new line of conversation. Additionally no one likes revisionist history! (kidding), but use it as a guide post for future articles. Oh, once something joins the ones and zeros of the interwebs it’s in existence forever somewhere.

Hey, lets put it this way, its better that you speak your mind, this way we get to see it from your perspective and it teaches us a few things, than to not say a thing and we learn nothing. If people like your blog, they'll stay anyways, if they don't, they won't. Don't worry. That post was actually responsible for getting me interested in the game Infinity. So cheers.

I'm with Garnet. Don't delete the post. These blogs are meant to be a record of our thoughts at particular times. That's just where you were that day and as Garnet says there was an excellent debate in the comment section.

I think you've a right to rant once in a while.

After all, Grey Knights did totally ruin Warhammer 40K for so many armies and players. In fact, that Codex seems to have brough the game side of the hobby to a screeching halt, because no well balanced force can beat them...which leads to people getting disheartened about the whole thing.

Garnet said...

Eh, Grey Knights are overrated. I mean, they're good, no question. But aside from Chaos Daemons, there aren't really any armies that, properly constructed, can't put up a fight. It might be a harder fight for some than others, but they can still do it.

Dameon Green said...

I have to agree, Grey Knights are not a killing blow to 40k, and are very beatable, from Codex Vanilla SM, CSM, non-talored etc etc etc...

Play the missions not the armies

My 2 cents

It's OK dude, you know what's happened and have checked your own behavior to what you are comfortable with, that's the most important thing. :D

Keep posting about "your" hobby and your interactions with teh community. That's what we want to hear about. Letting off steam sometimes is part of the puzzle, just go with the flow and be happy (most of the time ;)).

Enjoy your hobby and thanks for letting us in on what you've done in the past and I look forward to seeing more in future.

Cheers,

Russ
