Dark Eldar Army Project Concepts

So some of you may have heard me mention it here and there, but I'm in the process of collecting a new army to rejoin the community of Warhammer 40,000 and it's dark eldar. Not only have I always been a huge fan of Jes Goodwin, but Brom as well and I think these two artists are cut from the same cloth. So  the idea of the project is to merge the two. I want my little minis to look like Brom paintings in 3D.

What this means, I have no idea, but I've been thinking hard on it, studying Brom's paintings and thinking up some ways I can do this.

More to come as I get to the point of actual painting. So far I have assembled a Wych, a Warrior and a Hellion to serve as my test models.

One thing I have had trouble finding is well-painted Dark Eldar armies on the web. They are few and far between. Synapse3.blogspot.com is a good one, though too much airbrush work for my tastes. Eyeoferror.blogspot.com is another.
Any of you out there have good sources of Dark Eldar Army pictures?

Best painted 40k army at the NOVA this year was a Dark Eldar force by Joe Johnson--I think his screen name is Fishboy. You may want to check the photo galleries from the tournament. They were very well done. Very violet. Much more interesting visually than the usual green on black that we see of the Dark Eldar.

There's a good series of videos by warbosstae on YouTube that give some nice examples. Having seen your work I know you don't need his tips but still some good ideas.

Hey G Red,
I recognize Joe as an artistic painter, but his style doesn't suit my tastes. His color choice throws me off...I kept thinking of gumballs when I see his Salamanders, and his DE have a toy-like quality that just doesn't do it for me. If I were to give him a critique, it's that he only highlights and doesn't shade. Also he highlights every edge whether light would hit it or not. Color-wise he's unique, but his colors are not ones I like - so that is personal taste thing...his style is on the other extreme of mine I suppose.

De gustibus non est disputandum :) Style preferences aside, he does make some intriguing color choices [ I thought of Miami Vice when I saw his Salamanders, with all the pastels --the TV series, not the movie.] His Dark Eldar army, which does not photograph all that well from what I've seen-- due to poor lighting-- was a nice change from the usual look of the Dark Eldar, which is not at all to my taste. Too heavy on the BDSM motif. But then, I don't care for the "grimdark" in general. I like a brighter palette than what most 40k painters use. Now, you seem to gravitate to some variant of light blue/cyan quite often from what I've seen. You could try to paint these DE using colors well outside of your usual comfort zone. [And banish all blues from your palette.] 'Twould be interesting to see the results. Colors are just tools. You do not need to like a particular color in order to use it, anymore than you need to like a screwdriver. It is what you do with them that matters.

And do remember that the Dark Eldar are, or were originally, 'space pirates'...so you could paint them as such. Autarch Jack Sparrow anyone?

DimmyK, nice links! Thanks. All those are really great.

G Red,
I'm thinking of looking at the Greyjoys from Games of Thrones for inspiration - not really the colors, but the fluff.
Dark Eldar are difficult, because they're evil and people get stuck making them look evil - hence the dark blues and greens. On the other hand, I haven't liked any of the bright and wildly colored dark eldar armies I've seen lately...there just seems to be very few well executed Dark Eldar armies...and DE seem to have also fallen into a mono-build. Dunno.

I'll think I'll just have to get painting!

Hey Tim,

I took a break from painting 2 years ago but visiting your blog and checking out all your work got me inspired to start up the hobby again.

This might come a little late, but I picked up a Dark Eldar Army too... you can see my scheme here:

Keep up the good work! Your painting daughter is adorable!
I have a son now but he's only 3 months!
